Beresford Square, Woolwich

Introducing co-living to the historic market square

Woolwich, London

Overview

The site straddles historic and emerging neighbourhoods and sits within the newly revitalised public realm of Beresford Square. The scheme is a 156-room coliving development, marking a new chapter for the historic market square in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

In collaboration with Assael Exteriors, the scheme transforms a vacant office building on a prominent corner site overlooking the square, home to Woolwich Market for more than 400 years. The proposals introduce a publicly accessible restaurant at ground level, activating the square throughout the day and into the evening, alongside a range of resident amenities including co-working spaces, a gym and wellness studio, communal lounges, and a rooftop terrace with views across the market.

The architectural approach draws on the material palette of the surrounding conservation area, with detailing that references the character of the historic market buildings in a contemporary interpretation. Signage for Beresford Square is integrated into the street-facing elevation, with lettering inspired by historic signage found around the square, reinforcing and celebrating local identity.
