Chiswick Green

A vision to reimagine Chiswick High Street

Hounslow / London

Overview

Chiswick Green is a landmark retrofit project delivering 137 new homes, including townhouses and apartments, all set within a thoughtfully designed streetscape.

Assael was approached to realise the vision for the transformation of Empire House, a 1960’s office block situated in the sensitive location in the heart of Chiswick High Street. The repurposed building provides 137 new high-quality homes and reinvigorates a significant section of Chiswick High Road. The sensitive yet contemporary design respects the area’s heritage while delivering much-needed homes in a sustainable way, setting a new standard for urban renewal.

At the heart of the scheme is Empire House, an 11-storey 1960s office block, thoughtfully refurbished and re-clad to better integrate with the surrounding conservation area. The development introduces 137 new homes – including townhouses and apartments – blending private and affordable housing within an elegantly composed streetscape. Designed to strengthen connections, the scheme also enhances the once-utilitarian service road, transforming it into a key link between Chiswick Station and Chiswick High Road.

Architecturally, the new design of Empire House enhances its vertical proportions, integrating harmoniously into the streetscape, and refines its relationship with the adjacent listed pub. Recladding with brick and engineered stone ensures a contemporary yet contextual look. The revitalised ground-floor retail frontage improves the pedestrian experience, while new landscaping and pathways enhance connectivity between Chiswick High Road and Essex Place. Thoughtful planting, active frontages, and high-quality materials soften the urban environment, creating a welcoming and accessible community space.
