Revitalising Purley - A Vision for Regeneration

Croydon / London

Overview

Assael’s visionary designs for Polaska drive broader urban regeneration, beginning with a new leisure centre and a vibrant integrated retirement community on the former Purley Pool site.

Polaska, the long-term leaseholder of the Purley Pool site, partnered with Assael to transform the closed facility into a catalyst for town centre regeneration. The masterplan includes a new leisure centre, a later-living housing scheme with 220 homes (independent living, assisted living, and care facilities), and a vibrant public square.

The leisure centre will feature a 25-metre, six-lane main pool, a training pool, an 80-station fitness suite, and a multi-purpose studio. Additional amenities include a café overlooking the training pool, a soft play area, and direct access to the public square, fostering a welcoming environment.

Assael prioritises pedestrian-friendly spaces and urban connectivity, enhancing the route between Whytecliffe Road South and the High Street for better access to Purley Station. The design respects the site’s natural topography, with lower buildings along the High Street and a landmark structure on Whytecliffe Road for wayfinding.

The façade features intricate brickwork inspired by local heritage, with herringbone patterns and chamfered detailing in red brick. The landscaping strategy introduces flexible open spaces for events, public art, and play, seamlessly integrating the square with surrounding pathways and ensuring an engaging, accessible public realm.
