Digbeth High Street
At the heart of Rea Valley's new urban community
Overview
This design transforms a vacant brownfield site, adjacent to a key arterial road into Birmingham City Centre, toward a residentially-led mixed-use development – providing 481 new homes alongside impressive commercial and amenity spaces.
The new homes are split across two-buildings and are aligned to comprise of private sale, shared ownership and social rent along with flexible commercial spaces, new public realm and generous internal and external communal amenity space for residents.
Central to the activation of the ground floor is The Pavilion, which links Building A and Building B. The Pavilion has been designed to be open and welcoming with views through to the residential courtyard beyond. It sets back from the main building line to create space for a pocket park and significantly improving the public realm.
Architecturally, the design has been informed by the site’s industrial heritage through common tones of red brick with stone and metal accent materials. Ornamentation and expression of functional use is clearly indicated across the building materials that present a clear robustness and solidity which inform a strong and consistent rhythm.
