Assael partners with #WhyCoLiving campaign on new ‘Futureproof Housing’ report

As proud partners of the #WhyCoLiving? campaign, Assael has contributed to a new research-backed article that highlights co-living as a financially and environmentally sustainable housing solution.

Last year, Director Tim Chapman-Cavanagh and Associate Director Ed Sharland joined industry peers in supporting Conscious Coliving’s #WhyCoLiving campaignan initiative aimed at informing housing leaders on the benefits of shared living. The latest article, Futureproof Housing: Why Co-Living is a Financially & Environmentally Sustainable Sector, offers a comprehensive look at how co-living addresses today’s urban housing challenges.

The article first explores how co-living responds to evolving housing demands shaped by long-term population trends. Positioned as an essential part of a diverse housing mix, co-living appeals to a wider range of residents from Gen Z’s to Millennials and international migrants by offering affordable, independent living with built-in community and support. Additionally, it helps professionalise the rental market, providing higher-quality homes amid a decline in buy-to-let landlords.

The piece then examines the financial appeal of co-living, which has seen rapid growth and consolidation over the past decade. Institutional and impact-driven investors are increasingly drawn to the sector for its strong yields and potential for meaningful social and environmental returns. With a maturing market and a professional, evolving ecosystem, co-living is proving itself to be a robust investment opportunity.

The article highlights how co-living also promotes environmentally sustainable living. Flexible design allows for efficient retrofitting of existing buildings, while the all-inclusive rent model incentivises energy-saving investments. Central locations, shared amenities, and compact layouts help reduce transport emissions and overall energy use. Operator-led initiatives and community influence further foster sustainable habits among residents.

The report points out that co-living remains chronically undersupplied in the UKdespite its potential to contribute meaningfully to the government’s target of delivering 1.5 million new homes over the next five years.

Well done to the Conscious Coliving team for producing another insightful and informative report. The full article is available to read on their website: https://www.consciouscoliving.com/why-coliving-futureproof-housing/
