Former Boddington’s Brewery Site Phase Two
Affordable homes shaped by low-carbon design strategies
Overview
Located within Manchester city centre, this scheme will provide 505 homes and a new central landscaped public courtyard, that contributes to the wider regeneration of the Great Ducie Street area.
Set across two buildings ranging from 11 to 27 storeys, the homes will offer residents expansive views from private, south-facing rooftop terraces.
The project proposals are aimed at operational carbon emissions, well below the Building Regulations requirements by using low carbon design approaches and technologies, deployment of on-site renewable energy generation and a car-free movement strategy. It will also offer high-quality amenities such as commercial spaces, a concierge, a resident lounge and co-working spaces, alongside a strong landscaped courtyard that helps connect to the local proximity of the Manchester city centre.
Architecturally, the building material palette and façade design takes inspiration from the local vernacular, proposing with a continuous stone horizontal band to distinguish the lower floors and the upper floors. The cohesive elevational treatment aims to merge a sense of identity between the two buildings – and show no visible distinctions in material palette, composition or detailing. Key principles in the courtyard landscape design opens and connects the precinct to surrounding streets and facilitates movement throughout the site for community engagement.
