This £60 million project known as Fanar North on Amwaj Island provides a highly desirable place to live.
The driver behind the design was to create a layout and form that would maximise views of the vibrant waterfront to all apartments. With a deep site, this evolved into an interlaced layout with the added benefit of integrating shaded areas between buildings, which allowed us to create landscaped gardens with cascading water features.
The gardens are located above a stone-clad plinth providing naturally ventilated car parking and servicing facilities for the development and marina management offices. A lively marina frontage includes retail, restaurants, cafes and market spaces with exhibition facilities for events. Sky gardens are also featured in the design, with equal views to the east and west.
Acknowledging the target market for the residential space, we incorporated twin lift cores to provide an air of exclusivity and privacy for access to the apartments. The residential accommodation features open plan layouts, with central living spaces leading to large recessed balconies. These outdoor living spaces provide shaded views of Amwaj Marina in the foreground and look across the bay towards the skyline of Manama, the capital of Bahrain.
Shaded elevations are provided by white cement pre-cast facades, with exposed crushed glass aggregates. The palette of materials takes its reference from the azure-coloured waterfront and chalky-coloured stone in the area.
While predominantly residential, the provision of a hotel offers further facilities and services to the apartments, as well as providing hotel suites.
Protruding out onto the peninsula of the marina is a concept design for a new marina club complex. The interplay of the proposed horizontal floor plates will provide shaded terraces and deeply recessed, yet fully glazed facades to take advantage of the spectacular sea views.
Unique and prestigious, these apartments make a strong statement and an attractive addition to the area.
