Albert Embankment, London SE1

Client: Berkeley Homes (City & East London) Ltd

Team Leader: Chris Gaylord

Date: 2000 - 2002

Proposed Use: Residential / commercial unit and restaurant

Former Use: Redundant British Steel Headquarters

Gross Internal Area: 23,250 m2

Accommodation: 270 apartments including 25% affordable

Construction Value: £15 million

The renovation of the building had to resolve all the technical issues caused by the nature of the existing structure; existing floor-to-floor heights, acoustic protection and servicing were all inappropriate for luxury residential use. In some cases floors were extended outwards to achieve better accommodation, which fit well into a former corporate headquarters. The three new penthouse levels are the first on London's Albert Embankment to rise above the statutory height limit. They are light and elegant in appearance, complimenting the solid nature of the existing building, and floor-to ceiling windows take maximum advantage of the spectacular views. A new ground floor restaurant and health club will compliment the luxury residential use above.
