The design of this landmark building will retain the existing lecture
theatre and the stair cores. A three-storey high archway will be
created in the front façade adjacent to the theatre. This
will open onto a new courtyard at the centre of the building and
will mitigate the building’s current impenetrable appearance.
New penthouses will be added to the front and back of the building,
and the southern side will be lowered to flood the new courtyard
with light.
The new scheme will comprise a mix of social and private housing
as well as retail, offices and leisure spaces (restaurants, bars
and health club) and a local theatre group will take over the lecture
theatre, lobby and pre-assembly spaces.
